AVAILABLE PROJECTS

FMAM
A live performance based on FM / AM Synthesis. Reshaping of sinewaves with modulation-, feedback- and filter loops.
A thorough meditation on frequency, dissonant harmonics and improvised composition. The character of the performance is minimal, immersive and quiet with a possible burst. Please contact me for more info..

RECENT PROJECTS

Live Cinema w/ Karl Klomp
Christian Toonk makes minimal sound compositions consisting out of stretched sinewaves melodies, feedback overtones and clipped noise excerpts. During the performances the sound is accompanied by Karl Klomp's visuals, which consist out of warm colored abstract images made with a circuitbend videomixer.

Performance:
> stateoftheimage, Arnhem, NL - Sept 8 2006 - stateoftheimage.com
> afregelsalon, DNK-Amsterdam, NL - Oct 2 2006 - dnk-amsterdam.com
> live cinema, worm - Rotterdam, NL - Oct 13 2006 - wormweb.nl
> live cinema, Sm's 's Hertogenbosch, NL - Oct 19 2006 - poonweb.nl
> live cinema, Extrapool - Nijmegen, NL - Oct 20 2006 - extrapool.nl
> gruizig & prettig, culdesac - Tilburg, NL - May 15 2007 - culdesac.nl

Live Cinema w/ Ryan Parteka
Feedback, sinewaves and noise are the basic elements for a dense soundscape of harmonic distortion made by Toonk. Parteka explores the space between the organic and inorganic sounds of toonk. The visuals of parteka are assembled from the language of cinema, science and memory. Through costem made software and improvisation parteka and toonk create haunted narrative cinema.

468 w/ Bas van Koolwijk
Continuation of the RGB project with Bas van Koolwijk. This time not the PAL video signal as basis, but the ITU-R 468-weighting curve, Which is used when measuring niose in audio systems. This collaborate project explores noise, with an emphasis on detail.
Long stretched harmonies of total distortion, quiet with occasional burst.

Performance:
> kraakgeluiden, overtoom 301 - Amsterdam, NL - Jan 09 2006 - kraakgeluiden.com - download: 468-kraak.mp3
> umatic night, overtoom 301 - Amsterdam, NL - Apr 25 2007 - squat.net
SineWaveImprovisation
The basic idea for SWI is the phenomenon of binaural tones. When the distance between congruence frequencies is changed, pulsations occur.
Sine waves and related feedback interplay while slowly reaching cresendo only to fall and repeat the process again. Ambient sinusoidal drones.

Performance:
> urban explorers festival, Dordrecht, NL - May 11-14 2006 - urbanexplorers.nl
> placard headphone festival, garage - Stralsund, DE - Aug 06 2005 - leplacard.org
> camera lucida DVD event, release party, melkweg, NL -
may 27 2007 - portablepalace.com

Releases:
> unison - 3 tracks based on sinewaves, released on the spanish netlabel conv - Nov 12 2005 - con-v.org

Room Mirror
Audio performance based on feedback processes. By using microphones as input, the room forms the basis for a self inflicting audio system. Picked up sounds, like noise, hiss and murmur are gained, filtered and transformed before they are delivered back to the room. This results in an ongoing dataflow that reflects and fills the room. This dataflow can be altered with both the ingoing (environment) and the outgoing (computer) signals. The actual measurement and material of the recorded space, the objects inside it and the present audio, form the building blocks for a (audio) interface. With spatial sound as input and the conditions how they appear controlled with the computer, feedback becomes a highly playable sound source.

Performance:
> garage 04 festival - Stralsund, DE - Aug 06 2004 - garage.in-mv.de
exhibition:
> D>art05 Festival - Sydney, AUS - Aug 10-Sep 04 2005 - dlux.org.au

RGB w/ Bas van Koolwijk
The live performance RGB is based on the video channels red, green and blue. By direct transposition of the video signal to audio, Bas van Koolwijk creates a real time soundtrack using colour fields only. The sound environment is completed by Christian Toonk. Toonk uses audio feedback derived from amplified computer processes causing modulations and subtle phasing with the underlaying frequencies. The result is a steadily changing audible field full of suspense, blurring the actual time span.
